Description"This study of two young English girls has been in a Montreal collection since it was painted in 1910", (AGH, News) T. R. MacDonald (AGH) catalogue showed: The sitters were Dorothy and Irene Vaughan, aged at the time 12 and 18 years. The picture was painted for their uncle, Victor E. Mitchel, K.C. of Montreal. "The younger sister is my mother, Mrs. Irene Menzies nee Vaughan... The painting was commissioned by great uncle, Victor Mitchell with whom my mother and her elder sister were living at the time in Montreal ... he did not die until the late 20's or early 30's and, from a letter my mother sent to the Trust handling Victor Mitchell's Estate, the painting, she implies, had been in the hands of the Montreal public authority since it was painted in 1910." (correspondence from Eileen Vaughan Menzies, London,England, to The Director, AGH, 6 Oct. 1980 - see artists file Brymner) This painting was purchased by the AGH as a replacement for, and with funds from the insurance claim for, "Summer Landscape, martiques" by the same artist, which was stolen 6 April 1960, Summer Landscape,Martiques" was later returned to the collection, see 57.43.L Reproductions: this work reproduced for a slide package "Towads a National Image: Painting in Canada c. 1565-1900" produced by McIntyre Educational Media Ltd., Rexdale, 1983: Part 5 - Traditional Painters c. 1850-1900,slide 37On View
