ERCOLE DE' ROBERTI

Ercole de' Roberti was the court painter to Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. As per Luke Syson "Ercole de' Roberti Grandi (c. 1456-1496) was one of the most individual painters of his generation whose carefully nurtured abilities earned him both wealth and reputation. His short career reached its peak in the service of Ercole I d'Este from 1486 until his death....Ercole shows himself to have been an artist of exceptional intelligence and invention who could translate his designs into paintings of concentrated, intense beauty."

His dates appear in many variations - c. 1450-1496; 1451-1496; 1456-1496....etc.
